I still remember when the Unicorn Frappuccino was first announced and debuted back in 2017, but I never got around to trying it back then. When I learned it would be returning for just two days in August, I swore I’d get my hands on one.
The Unicorn Frappuccino is made with a crème base, and despite the name, there is actually no coffee or caffeine in it. While that might be disappointing to some people, it actually works for me as I’m not really a coffee drinker, and generally avoid excess caffeine unless it’s for a very specific purpose. The main flavor is mango, with a blue drizzle that is really only described as “sour.” The drink itself is bright purple and blue, with whipped cream on top and blue and purple powder on top of that. The look is really built for people wanting to share that they tried the drink on social media.
The only time I was able to find to pick the drink up over the weekend was on my way to work on Sunday the 16th, where I decided I’d drink it throughout my shift. It was priced at $7.25 plus tax, which is more than I’d normally want to spend on something like this, but I felt it was worth it to try it. The mango flavor was immediately evident, as was the sweetness of the drink. With about 59 grams of sugar in the grande size (the only size that was offered, at least this time around), it is a lot more sugar than the average person is likely to want in one item. However, when you compare it to dirty sodas that have been popularized lately, which can have as much as 93 grams in the same size serving, it doesn’t seem quite as crazy. I ended up pairing most of the drink with a meal later that day, which seemed like a good idea, until I realized how filling the frappuccino was on its own, stunting my appetite for actual food.
I did enjoy the Unicorn Frappuccino as a novelty item, which is essentially what it was designed to be. I’m almost always a fan of mango flavored items, both in cases when it’s natural or more artificial (I’d say in this case, it falls in the middle leaning towards artificial). The frappuccino is definitely not something you’d get daily or even weekly, but once in a while (with that while being potentially a very long time considering there was a 9 year gap between the debut period and the return release this year). Ultimately, I’d say it’s worth trying, but it should be treated more as a relatively filling dessert than an average drink.
